Extended Area Description
Adams County, WI.
Part of the Central Sand located between Wisconsin Dells and Wisconsin Rapids with the Wisconsin River creating the western border of the county also forming both Castle Rock Lake and Lake Petenwell. There is a mix of farmland and recreation areas with a mix of Full time residential homes and vacation getaway cabins. You can find lakes, creeks, trout streams, public land, parks, ATV routes, snowmobile trails, rock formations, whitetail deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, even some wolves and black bears.
The city of Adams and the Village of Friendship, are located in the township of Adams in Adams County. State Highway 13 cuts the county in half running through the middle of both towns. They are located halfway between Wisconsin Dells and Wisconsin Rapids. County road J on the north end of town and County Road F on the south end of town will both take you over to Castle Rock Lake which is the 4th largest inland body of water in the state.
Friendship is the County Seat. There is a Hospital, "Moundview Memorial", a clinic and the fairgrounds as well as a very nice golf course. There is Friendship Mound with 303 steps to the top, overlooking the towns and Friendship Lake. From the platform at the top you can see several counties. The lake offers good fishing and even a beautiful swimming area and boat launch.
Most of the shopping is in Adams and they also have the school system. Along Main Street there are a variety of small businesses and also some larger chain stores such as Dollar General, Subway, Family Dollar, McDonalds, Ace Hardware and Shopko. Adams is a Railroad town and also has an industrial park. There is a Concrete plant on the south end of town as well huge flea market in season.
Colburn Wildlife Area
Colburn Wildlife Area is about 5,000 acres located in Colburn Township of Adams County, Central Wisconsin. This area is south of County Road C just west of Cty G and north of Chicago Ave. Access points are very limited because most of the land around the wildlife area is privately owned by mostly 40 acre+ parcels. Public roads touching Colburn Wildlife Area are Cty C, 6th Ave, Blackhawk Dr, 4th Ave and Chicago Ave. Two Creeks run through the area including Dry Creek and Carter Creek. Most of this land was purchase back in 1947 and is currently manage by the Wisconsin DNR (Department of Natural Resources). There is plenty of wildlife including Whitetails Deer, Eastern Wild Turkey, squirrels, rabbits, badgers (State Animal), woodchucks, fox, coyotes, wolves Ruffed Grouse, Sandhill Cranes, herons, egrets, woodpeckers and even black bear from time to time… Activities allowed are Hunting, Hiking, Trapping, Bird Watching plus foraging for natural wild edibles like berries and mushrooms. The property consists of woods, meadows, wetlands / marsh, brush, oaks, pines, and aspen trees.
Friendship Park is in Friendship Village just below the Hydroelectric Dam that regulates the water levels for Friendship Lake which is fed by both Fordham Creek and Little Roche A Cri Creek. After the hydro dam is a small pooling area the water is held before is turns back into Little Roche-A-Cri Creek trout stream. Thereâs a newer arched walking bridge that suspends over the creek giving access from one side of Friendship Park to the other just north of the winter sledding hill. On this side of the park you will find a small wildlife pond used mostly by Birds, Frogs and Turtles. wildlife pond on this side of the park used by the local mostly birds, frogs and turtles. Friendship Lake, Wisconsin
Friendship Lake is located in Adams County, Central Wisconsin just outside Friendship Village & City of Adams to the north. Itâs formed by both Little Roche-A-Cri Creek and Fordham Creek which are controlled by the Friendship Dam right next to the public beach and boat launch. Below the dam is Friendship Park where the water turns into a trout stream called Little Roche-A-Cri Creek that flows all the way into Wisconsin's 4th largest body of water, Castle Rock Lake. The Park offers volleyball courts, picnic tables, grills, family pavilion, playground equipment including; swings, merry-go-round and slides. It's overlooked by Friendship Mound (privately owned) rising about 350 ft high and offering amazing 15+ mile views. Friendship Lake also offers fine fishing for Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and a variety of Panfish plus waterskiing is allowed.
Town of Preston, Wisconsin
Preston Township is located in Adams County, Central Wisconsin just north of Adams/Friendship. Preston has the only State Park in the County; Roche-A-Cri State Park. The park features Roche-A-Cri Mound which has 303 steps all the way to the top with a lookout platform facing the north with views also to both east and west where you can see the hills of Coloma and all the way to the Wisconsin River Valley. Carter Creek flows through the state park and eventually feeds into Castle Rock Lake, WI. You can see dozens of Turkey Vultures circling the mound on any given day. Directly to the South is Friendship Mound which over looks both Friendship Lake and Friendship Park.
Preston is also home to Big Roche-A-Cri Lake which is about 200 acres of ski able water formed by Big Roche-A-Cri Creek trout stream. There's also Carter Creek, Deed Horse Creek, Fordham Creek and Bingham Creek which forms Bingham Pond. Besides Roche-A-Cri State Park there's also Remnant Fordham Creek and Remnant Little Roche-A-Cri Creek which is also open to the public for Trout Fishing and Hunting.
Remnant Fordham Creek WI - Public Land and Trout Stream
REM-Fordham Creek is located north of Cty Road J just east of Adams-Friendship, WI with 2 locations. This public land area is about 37 acres mostly wooded with row pines along Cty Rd J then turns into a small meadow heading north into a mix woods with a steep slope before the creek that is surrounded by lowlands. The wetlands around Fordham Creek at this location were still pretty wet in midsummer. Thereâs about 1,800 feet of trout stream frontage on this smaller chunk of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource land with some of it adjoining four private parcels. Fordham Creek is a total of 7 miles which flows into Friendship Lake after joining with Little Roche-A-Cri Creek. By the Remnant section of the creek is a class 1 trout stream with Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Roche-A-Cri State Park
Welcome to the home of Turkey Vultures, Whitetail, Squirrels, Red Fox and many other Wisconsin Wildlife residents. Roche-A-Cri State Park established in 1948 is 605 acres of woods and has many different recreational activities from sight-seeing to hiking 303 steps up Roche-A-Cri Mound. Several rest areas offer different settings where you can enjoy a nice picnic. There are 45 rustic campsites available and the park even offers campfire wood for your convenience. If you wish to climb the hill, there is a 300 foot stairway that includes resting places along the way. During your journey, you will find areas that tell the history of the hill. At the top is a platform that will allow you to see 10 different counties, many fine fishing lakes, Friendship Mound, and plenty of other unique places for discovery. Like to fish? Remnant Little Roche-A-Creek - Public Land and Trout Stream
REM-Little Roche-A-Cri Creek consists of two areas, one starting at the intersection of 8th Dr & Czech Ave following the creek on a northeast to 8th Ave. This section is about 6,000 feet of a class 1 trout stream it continues on past 8th Ave as a class 2 stream for about another 4,400 feet. The total area of this section of land for the Remnant Little Roche-A-Cri section is about 180 wooded acres that are not just fishing ground, but open for public hunting land as well. The second area is located in both Preston Township and a little bit in Adams Township north of County Road J and east of 10th Ave. By this section of the Remnant is a class 1 trout stream with Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout.
