Wisconsin is home to the 430 mile long Wisconsin River. The river is known for its amazing historical background. Many years ago before it turned into the river, it was used throughout the state as a road for transportation from one location to another. The river begins at the Northeast corner of the state and ends at the Mississippi River. When fishing in the river you get the best of both worlds. Not only do you get to bask in the glory of prime Wisconsin fish, but you get to enjoy the freshness of the Mississippi creatures. The Wisconsin River flows through Adams County into Wisconsin Dells which is filled with fun attractions and historical landmarks. An interesting fact is that around 14,000 years ago, the ice that formed Lake Wisconsin melted away causing overflow which cut a portion of the Wisconsin River out which in turn created the Wisconsin Dells.
Part of the Central Sand located between Wisconsin Dells and Wisconsin Rapids with the Wisconsin River creating the western border of the county also forming both Castle Rock Lake and Lake Petenwell. There is a mix of farmland and recreation areas with a mix of Full time residential homes and vacation getaway cabins. You can find lakes, creeks, trout streams, public land, parks, ATV routes, snowmobile trails, rock formations, whitetail deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, even some wolves and black bears.
Mason Lake is an 855 acre fishing lake that is shared with the Township of New Haven in Adams County and Douglas Township in Marquette County, Wisconsin. Mason Lake is one of Adams Cty larger fishing lakes but it’s not really a skiable lake due to the stump fields and overall depth being only 7 ft. and a max depth of 9 ft. deep. The lake does offer quality fishing for Northern Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Walleye and a wide variety of panfish. Big Spring Creek helps fill both Mason Lake but also Big Spring Lake. On the north end of Mason Lake is McCall Lake which is about 4.4 acres and 37 feet deep. McCall Lake actually looks more like a large bay on Mason Lake than a separate lake altogether.
Amey Pond Wildlife Refuge Area
Amey Pond Wildlife Refuge is located in New Haven Township, which is the southeast corner of Adams County, Central Wisconsin, just north of Columbia County and West of Marquette County. It consists of 100% of the land around Amey Pond which is 56 acres of water owned by the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. There’s a little creek about 2 city blocks long that link Mason Lake and the pond together. Just like Mason Lake, it has Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Panfish and possibly some Walleye with a maximum depth of about 7 feet. According to a posted WI DNR sign, there is: “#1. No Waterfowl Hunting at any time and #2. No Entry September 1st to December 31st. This area provides habitat for a variety of Wisconsin Waterfowl including: Mallard Ducks, Wood Ducks, Coots, Pelicans, Geese and more…
