What is the Buckhorn Barrens WI? At the end of the Ice Age, Wisconsin's Glacial Lake began drastically draining which in turn flooded the Lower Wisconsin River Valley. This area now is considered the Central Sands of Wisconsin. After time, due to the massive flooding, large amounts of sand began to create terraces along river banks. These sandy areas are called Sand Barrens and are home to many rare creatures that you won't find anywhere else. Sand Barrens have specific types of plants that are able to grow in such poor soil environments as the barrens have. These barrens have savanna-like conditions that provide both habitats and scenic beauty.
Buckhorn State Park is located in Germantown Township of Juneau County, Central Wisconsin on both Castle Rock Lake and the Yellow River. The park consists of about 6,000 acres of outdoor haven offering a little bit for everyone including the local Wisconsin Wildlife. There’s lot of outdoor photography opportunities and nature experiences to have if its camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, trapping, boating, swimming, fishing, backpacking, picnicking or just sitting back and watching the natural world go by. The state park includes miles of frontage and several boat launches offering tons of water activities on the Yellow River and Castle Rock Lake part of the Wisconsin Flowage system. Castle Rock is WI’s 4th largest inland body of water and is a manmade lake controlled by a hydro dam (creating hydroelectricity) to the South where the water turns back into the Wisconsin River.

REM or Remnant refers to an area in protected tract of land whose fishing habitat is preserved. These Remnants are mainly along trout streams for cold water species like Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Brook Trout. These Fishery Areas are scattered throughout Wisconsin with an estimated 12,000 acres with some having natural springs. They are important spawning grounds for the species they harbor. Some of these Remnants provide easements through private lands to give the public access to fish these waters. Remants are typically open as Wisconsin Public Land for both hunting and fishing grounds but always check the local rules and regulations first for that time of year.
